Why Your Website Gets Traffic but No Leads

A website headline card with a five-second timer, showing the five-second test

Your analytics look fine. A few hundred visitors a month, maybe more. The phone's quiet and the inbox is empty.

The usual response is to buy more traffic. Usually the better move is to look at what those visitors see when they land.

The five-second test

Show your homepage to someone who's never seen it. Give them five seconds, close the page, and ask what the company does and who it's for.

If they hesitate or guess wrong, that could be why customers are choosing your competitors over you.

The cause is often the headline. “Quality service since 2009” describes the company. It doesn't tell a stranger whether the page is for them.

Write it with this formula instead:

We help [specific audience] achieve [specific outcome] in [timeframe] without [common pain point].

For example: “We help Ontario homeowners get a firm roofing quote in 24 hours without waiting on callbacks.”

One line covers who it's for, what they get, how fast, and what they won't have to put up with.

Three more places leads leak

Too many choices. Six services, three buttons, and a blog feed on one page. People facing that many options tend to pick none.

A vague or buried call to action (CTA). A CTA is the button or link that asks for the next step. “Contact us” in the footer is easy to miss. “Request a quote” in the header and after each section is hard to miss.

A form that asks for too much. Ten fields to request a quote filters out people who were ready to buy. Ask for name, contact info, and what they need. Get the rest on the call.

To spot these, request a quote from your own site on your phone, then check your analytics for pages with high exit rates. Those pages are where people give up.

Fix the path before you pay for more traffic

Ads and search rankings send more people into the same leak. Fix the path first and every visitor you already have is worth more.
